Microsoft offers a quarter of its workforce voluntary severance while shielding AI-critical teams
affects 60,000 employees
Microsoft is offering voluntary severance packages to about 60,000 employees, roughly a quarter of its workforce. The company's headcount has held flat at around 223,000 since 2022. Microsoft plans to spend about $170 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026. The program excludes areas important to Microsoft's AI strategy, such as data centers and quantum computing. This is the company's second such program in 2026, following a buyout offer to 8,750 U.S. employees in May and a job cut of 4,800 in July. Microsoft's workforce remains roughly the same as in 2022 despite strong revenue growth.
